Thanks to Bookish First I was able to read an excerpt of this title and was instantly drawn into the writing style and the protagonist’s experience as he transitions from working at Starbucks to a growing startup company. I was even more thrilled to win a paperback ARC via the raffle & could not wait to read the rest of the book!

A fast-paced book full of eye-opening experiences that make it a must-read. this story follows Darren “Buck” as he becomes the only black guy working for a tech startup after the CEO hires him after a chance encounter.

If this is Askaripour’s debut, I cannot wait to see what he writes in the future, because this was absolutely incredible.

Full of insight from the perspective of a minority individual trying to work in a world that still has a lot to learn about diversity, Buck’s character was smart, driven, and like all of us dealing with the pressure from life, love, friends, and family - but for a black male in his early twenties, opportunities like the one he is given are rare.

“Most superheroes don’t know they’re superheroes until they get caught up in a moment, just like you. Something either overcomes them, showing them a glimpse of their hidden powers, or they’re pushed so far past their limitations that they have no choice but to succumb to whatever makes them most special.”

With witty advice sprinkled in addressed to us as the reader, I was hooked and I know this book will stay with me for a long time. It may not be easy to read about for some, those who struggle to see the inequality vs. privilege people face every day at work, in their personal lives, when faced with challenges, but in my opinion this was an absolute MUST read especially in today’s world.

Be prepared to think outside your comfort zone, learn about sales in the most realistic, unique way I’ve ever read. Fall for side characters with as much grit as heart, cry, get angry, and be surprised at this incredible book.

“Reader: The things we do and say on this earth, whether as salespeople or just people, matter. As do the things we don’t do or say. To be a salesperson is to believe that you are the master of your own destiny, something never to be taken lightly.”

I’ll be keeping my copy & taking the author’s note to heart - it was an absolute pleasure to read and review this book.
