This book is a prime example of when the marketing of a book can set the wrong expectations.
A little birdie informed me that this book actually started out as a memoir. That little tidbit of information definitely helped set the right expectations going in. I wasn’t expecting a twisty-turny story but one more driven on character development and emotional connections. If I hadn’t known that going in, I know I would have had a lot more issues with this book.
From what I gather, the only truth behind the story is the author’s experience living in Eastern Europe. So, don’t go thinking all that crazy stuff is real. Well…it could be right?...
The story starts off with a frantic 911 call. Something terrible has happened and someone is dead. We have no idea who it is or how it happened. The story then unfolds in three timelines. We have the Day of the killing, 2001 when Maddie and Ian met and then 8 weeks before the killing. Maddie and her best friend Jo, meet Ian, a handsome yet complicated military man in the Balkans. Right away Maddie is drawn to Ian, who seems like the epidemy of a bad seed. Honestly, this relationship seemed doomed from the beginning. This is a tragic love story that seemed all too real and sad.
I would categorize this as a domestic suspense but super light on the suspense. Like watching another train-wreck you can see from a million miles away.
