I loved this debut novel from Ayana Gray. The story is told in different POV, with one being in a different point in time. The voices are all unique and I was immediately hooked!
Koffi and her family fell into debt because of her father and end up at a local Night Zoo to work their debt off. One evening, Koffi discovers a power within her, but a tragic loss lends to her making a promise she may not be able to keep.
Meanwhile, Ekon is a young man with goals to be one of the Sons of Six, the Lkossa region soldiers/warriors. After a series of missteps, Ekon decides to make a grand gesture to claim his spot among the Sons of Six.
Ekon and Koffi go on an adventure together in search of the elusive, Shetani, a beast blamed for killing hundred of Lkossians. This trip opens their eyes, not only to one another, but to another truth entirely.
