I am actually really torn about this book because it wasn't necessarily... bad and I have been looking forward to reading it for a while. I wasn't bored at any point but I had multiple thoughts of "we have made it X far and I don't feel like anything has particularly happened."

There is so much set up and yet, it still managed to not provide us with much information or context to the world (as this was a "mystery" we were building up to with flash-back chapters/characters) so by the time we got there I was pretty over it.

I like their time in the jungle, the creatures and landscape were very creative and interesting to read about. I enjoyed some of their personal character growth over the book but also at times got a bit of whiplash over their decisions and ability to accept new information unquestioningly. Maybe this would all work better for a younger (and YA) crowd than it did for me.

I DID like most of the character growth, some of the twists and turns I didn't see coming were nicely subtly hinted at, and the cover design.
