In the city of Lkossa magic used to exist, it could be found just about everywhere in fact, but not anymore. Now the closest people can get to magic is at the Night Zoo, a zoo full of frightening, yet magical creatures. Koffi, a girl of sixteen, works at the Night Zoo with her mother; they are indentured to the owner, Baaz. Desperate to get out from under her family’s debts, Koffi makes a deal that involves the capture of the Shetani, a dangerous creature responsible for the killing of multiple citizens of Lkossa. Ekon is after the creature as well, thinking that it is his ticket into the Sons of Six, elite warriors within the city. Working together to capture the Shetani, while hiding their individual motives, Koffi and Ekon must face multiple obstacles together in the hopes of making it out of the Jungle alive.

Beasts of Prey is an incredible start to this series. The events are told not only from the perspective of the two main characters, but the reader gets to see things from through the eyes of a third character as well, and Grey does a great job of bringing the various events and perspectives together at just the right time. The characters themselves are well developed and the reader can’t help but to root for them as they grow and fight for what they feel is right. I like that there are elements of magic in Beasts of Prey, but it isn’t so much that it dominates the story, allowing the characters to shine instead. The descriptions are effective at painting a complete picture, creating a world that I can’t wait to explore more in the next book.
