I was entranced by the very first page meeting Adiah, who possesses a greater affinity for the splendor (magic) than other people.

The city of Lkossa came to life through two unique perspectives: Koffi, an indentured servant of the Night Zoo, a place of both mundane and unusual creatures, and Ekon, a young man hoping to complete his rites of passage and become an elite warrior, one of the Sons of Six. Both have strong personal motivations to find the Shetani, the monster in the jungle, and they form an alliance, braving the hunt together.

During their travels I was delighted by both their ease with one another and their moments of conflict. All of it felt natural and was endearing. Both had trauma in their pasts to confront and their emotional journeys were handled delicately.

The Greater Jungle is mysterious, menacing and magnificent. I loved all the magical creatures and dangers.

To avoid spoilers I’ll just say the plot twists in this book were fabulous. I didn’t see some of the big ones coming, but after those reveals I looked back and saw the hints were there. The puzzle pieces snapped together perfectly. Wonderful story-telling.

I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series. I already miss Koffi and Ekon (which means I’ll read it again within the year).
