What an incredible book.

I loved the pan african inspired world, with it’s african lore and and swahili inspired language. The world was built perfectly and explained well without any huge info-dump moments. There was also such a creative, interesting, and easy to grasp magic system flowing through the novel.

The main characters, Ekon Koffi and Adiah felt so real and fleshed out. Koffi and Ekon helping eachother through their own struggles, despite what they were dealing themselves was so fragile and sweet, i loved it. Koffi had such a prominent relationship with her mom, which was refreshing to see in a YA novel. I really enjoyed Adiahs chapters which are set about 100 years prior to present day. They don’t really make sense until later on in the book but i think they are such a cool way to help piece the story together when you do get to the part where it all makes sense.

The vividness and atmosphere of the greater jungle was incredible. Koffi and Ekon’s eerie journey through the jungle was so captivating there was no way i was going to put the book down until it was finished

The many twists and turns, trials and tribulations in this book will keep you completely enthralled. This book was amazing and now one of my top favorites- I can’t wait for book two!
