The cover's green foliage against the black background caught my eye and gave me a sense of nighttime adventure and danger before I even saw the snake's open mouth and the words "The Hunt Begins." It is beautiful.
I liked the shifting POV between Koffi at the Night Zoo and Ekon's coming of age preparations. I can't wait to see how the characters' stories intersect in the book, and how their tales relate to prologue and the existence of magic or splendor. The writing drew me into the characters and surroundings slowly and painted a vivid picture of the setting. I think Ayana Gray's writing will keep me turning pages steadily until the very end, and leave me wanting more.
