It’s clear this book is building a larger-than-life world to match the stories that have yet to unfold and it wastes no time in providing a truly immersive experience. The imagery and storyline were so strong in the first few pages that I was stunned to discover I was not even at the first chapter. In this introduction we are given a glimpse of an untapped magic at the center The Greater Jungle and the cataclysmic choice that feeds into the generations of mythology and unease held by neighboring villagers.
When we meet Koffi and her mother they are mourning a former Night Zoo beastkeeper and the latest victim of the Greater Jungle. As a beastkeeper, Koffi knows of the dangers of powerful creatures, but know humans are equally as dangerous. Ekon has a deep mistrust for the Greater Jungle, yet hears its calls whether he wants to acknowledge it or not. I really enjoy the way we are provided pieces in these narratives that don’t yet connect. With that in mind, I’m ready to see how our characters’ paths intertwine, if they will unlock the magic called splendor, and what twist and turns await them in the Greater Jungle.
