Beasts of Prey tells the story of a fictional city Lkossa, which has been plagued by an unseen monster for decades. Koffi and her mother work at the Night Zoo and are preparing to leave when a mishap changes their plans. Koffi discovers she has "the splendor," which we would call magic.
The jacket cover made me extremely interested in this story, but I ultimately found the passage difficult to follow and not captivating enough to make me care to parse out the characters. Koffi seems like an interesting heroine, but isn't introduced until later in the novel. Overall, this one could use some work.
