Why does it always have to have a man as a plot point

Look I get this genre of book has some sort of love affair as part of the narrative but in this case it really makes everything else fall flat. Her father almost died, she is hustling with a very intense career and trying to make her way....oh right AND deal with the weird bf scenario that seems to take up more of her time and the narrative than anything else....
I wish this was just a slice of life novel instead of what it is.
