I really wanted to like this book. The cover looks cool, the premise sounded exactly what I like to read and it’s a show so I like to read the book before watching the show. And it was just okay.
Sophie Whitehouse has a lovely home, two adorable children, and a handsome, successful husband. But everything changes the night her husband, James, comes home and confesses an indiscretion. Suddenly, her best, ordered world is turned upside down. Did she ever really know the man she married?
There are three POVS: Sophie, the wife; James, the accused; and Kate, the prosecutor or barrister. It’s mostly set in 2016-2017 England with flashbacks to when all three were in college. The pacing was slow in that the buildup to the big twist was about halfway, maybe a little more. James, the accused, is a bit predictable in that you aren’t going to like him. Sophie’s character you kinda feel sorry for because she’s blindsided by his indiscretions but at the same time, maybe she should have seen it coming? It was interesting to compare how the legal system in Britain works versus the legal system in the USA. I will probably watch the show if I can find it to see how it compares and if the producers change the storyline in anyway.
