This book starts with Kate, an attorney, prosecuting a government official, James, for rape. The story rotates primarily through the points-of-view of Kate, James (the husband accused), Sophie (wife), and Holly (former college mate of Sophie).
The story is excruciatingly slow at first, as it is extremely descriptive. Kate's chapters seem to drone on and on in the beginning, but by the end the pace picks up a bit. While rotating between characters, the story also flips between past college days and the current court case. While this style can sometimes become confusing, the author executes the flow well. The author eloquently captures a rape victim's self-blame and self-questioning while trying to cope with what's been done to her. The emotions and personality of each character are perfectly captured.
Overall, the book was a satisfying read. I think it is definitely relative to current events in the world.
