Gary Dickson’s first novel takes the reader back to Europe in the 1960s to experience the gourmet restaurants of Paris, the red carpet of Cannes and the lives of the wealthy in Geneva and Gstaad. Scott Stoddard is a graduate student sailing to Europe to continue his education in Geneva. Introduced to Desiree, the Countess de Rovere, he is immediately smitten by her beauty. When the ship docks they go their separate ways, but they are fated to meet again.

As Scott and Desiree explore their love for each other, they face a number of challenges. Desiree is older, from a distinguished family, wealthy and Catholic. Scott is dependent on his parents’ support and a Baptist. Rumors swirl and the lovers face opposition from her mother and members of society as well as threats from her ex-husband. If their love is to survive they must face these obstacles and find solutions.

Dickson’s story is one of glamour, determination and, above all else, love. I was caught up in this story from the first pages and thoroughly enjoyed their journey together. I would like to thank Bookish First and the Green Leaf Book Group for providing a copy of this book for my review.
