True Crime or Online Dating Don'ts?
This excerpt was interesting but felt like it went on forever because of the lengthly preface, which I admittedly thought was a prologue written in the voice of the main character for several pages. I really like the preface and almost would like that to be expanded into a book. The excerpt of the actual story was mostly about this one man's online dating experiences and his perspective of one online relationship with a woman called Liz, who we find out is dead in the first line of the story. I am not sure what is going to happen but given the perspective of the man and the description of the women, I think she probably murdered all his dates and was shot by the police. Admittedly if I were the man I would probably want to kill her but clearly he is such a wet towel he can't seem to definitively tell this lady that he doesn't want to see her anymore--or rather he only wants to see her for sex. Reading about this odd and totally one sided representation of a dysfunctional relationship made me glad I am single. Sadly there was barely anything about the murder at the point when the excerpt stopped and I wasn't sure whether it would finally jump back into the investigation of Liz's death or continue on in the saga of the midwestern man using Plenty of Fish--hilariously the one site my mom tried during a brief period of loneliness and optimism about the 50+ dating world. She ended up matched to her former brother-in-law who she hates with the fire of a thousand suns so pretty much had the same experience as this guy in terms of quality dating pool. I did love all the Midwest references though. It just needed more...murder.
