I’ve read a lot of true crime, and I do know who Ann Rule is, but have never read any of her books. So I can honestly say I am not influenced by who her mother is and read this without any expectations whatsoever, other than that the description sounded interesting. I have NEVER been hooked on a book from reading an introduction and often skip them, but the intro was so incredibly fascinating and so perfectly written. It tells you the interesting details, and she writes it in a way that makes it clear why she wrote the intro, she doesn’t want a free ride off her mother’s fame, but also makes it very clear that writing true crime may be in her DNA. Her own family’s story itself would probably be an incredible read alone. That was just the intro and it only got better as she begins to tell the story of a newly single guy who tries online dating for the first time after ending a 12 year relationship. Sometimes with true crime I find the it hard to get into at first because of all the detail understandably needed to write anything non fiction. That was not the case with his book. I wanted every detail given, every detail was interesting because it is so well written. If not written so well I could easily see some of the details needless and uninteresting, but the easy flow and simple style of the writing was so good, I never once thought “okay enough move on”, as I do often when starting a true crime book. I usually am just trying to get through the necessary boring details that set the stage for the good part of the book. I can not wait to read this book, win or not, I am so impressed and interested I can’t wait. Maybe I’ll try one of her mother’s books while I wait to see if her writing is as good as her daughters...
