A Dull Web

I had the opportunity to read an excerpt from A Tangled Web by Leslie Rule, her first attempt to follow in the career path of her mother - true crime writer Ann Rule. I'm not a reader of true crime, and was previously unfamiliar with her. But the bookishfirst points policy is getting me to at least look at genres I would not have. My understanding is that these are real people and the murder actually took place.

Half of the excerpt was an autobiographical forward, and since I'd never heard of the author or her mother, it seemed unimportant. Then the first few chapters are short character introductions. The backgrounds as told certainly are believable. In spite of the fact that I myself was raised in the Upper Midwest, the places were just words. Not sure if the problem was the blunt and relatively simplistic writing style, that the target audience is female, or just my lack of curiosity about internet dating, but there was no one I particularly cared about.

So, thanks, but no thanks.
