Promising Premise

Your One and Only had a promising premise, but ultimately lost my interest due to certain plot developments. The summary of the book points in the direction of a love story, but this novel is a dark tale of where innovation in science can go horribly wrong.

This is the story of Jack, the only human in a community full of clones that have been highly evolved over many generations. Jack feels alone, but so does Althea-310. She is different from her sisters and often feels like she is not an equal part of their community. Will the introduction of a human to their society usher in their destruction?

The biggest issue that I had with the book was regarding certain points to the plot that seem implausible. As Jack is essential to the future health of their society, it just did not seem likely that it would be allowed for him to be treated in anything less than a revered manner. Your One and Only is supposed to be an unlikely love story, but the romance portion of the book is overshadowed by the destruction of the utopian society due to feelings of superiority. The author spent so much time on the abuses and sabotages that I never really felt connected to the story. The conclusion of the book felt rushed and was completely implausible. I was expecting something different from this novel than I ultimately received and I was left with the feeling that Your One and Only was a missed opportunity.
