This is a wonderful example of dystopian fiction, reminiscent of Lowry's The Giver and works by Ursula K. LeGuin.
The world of Vispera has been finely crafted and populated by clones, descendants of the legendary Original Nine. A human, Jack, is introduced to Vispera's clones, and he is not well received by most. Althea-310, however, finds herself equally intrigued and repelled by Jack's differences, both physical and emotional. He is unable to commune with others, a practice in which the clones experience each other's emotions. With his gray eyes, he looks nothing like any of the clones, who are all brown eyed. And, unlike the perfectly healthy clones, Jack suffers from asthma.
Vispera's leaders know more about Jack and other humans than they want to admit, but hidden truths rise to the surface as Althea-310's world crumbles.
She and Jack investigate what remains of human artifacts and history, secured deep in the Tunnels. What they find shocks them both, and forces Althea-310 to make a difficult choice.
