I thought the clone situation was setup really well and I was totally fascinated. I like Althea and that her scar from her hand switch out makes her feel different. I’d like to read more from her POV.
I really love Jack and how he was made to feel different from the clones even though these elements are typical human ones. I feel for his isolation and while his violence seemed outrageous after so little provocation I think prolonged contact would have caused the same reaction.
My problem was the Carson bully and the obvious propensity for the personality to be a bully (as the older one was too!) A bully personality would have been softened by the other 9 Carsons in their chain, unless they all agree with him. In which case there wouldn’t have been a ringleader, they all would have taken action because bullies only feel power when THEY are the person with control. This isn’t even taking into account that bullies aren’t born they are made by their environment. Since this society raises them in exactly the same circumstances with no mother and father ALL would have been bullies or none.
I know this bully character is to create conflict because this is a rather contrived society with no conflict. Another thing... I’m not sure there is even a need for an engineer type. If you have access to past knowledge then there’s no need for engineers... Just ditch the Carsons and have a truly utopian society!
