In "You're Not Listening: What You're Missing and Why It Matters", Kate Murphy examines what it means to truly listen and why most people seem to not be listening well today. Each chapter explored a different aspect of listening, covering everything from the scientific mechanisms to real-world examples of how we are missing out on chances to improve our listening capabilities. Some of the things I found most interesting were the discussion on how fMRI scans show that when we have conversations with people we are close to and we are actually listening to, our brain scans actually look similar and somewhat sync up. I also enjoyed the chapter about how some business are using improv classes as a way to foster listening skills in their company - that was an exercise I had never thought of in that context but can completely see how it would be a fun way to really practice that skill. There were definitely aspects of this book that really hit home about how disconnected our society has become and even examine some of my own habits when it comes to listening to others. If you're looking for a good nonfiction read, I recommend checking this one out when it releases in January 2020. 4/5 stars
