Are you a good listener? Do you often look away or down at your phone or computer when others are talking to you? Do you interrupt to tell your own story? In 2020, we have more to distractions than ever, and this could be leading us to listening, and understanding each other, less.

You're Not Listening is a book about the who, what, when, where, why, and how of listening. Filled with examples and strategies, this book attempts to shed some light on the issue and present strategies for improvement.

This was a quick and easy read, and the author's experience and passion for the subject come through clearly. I enjoyed this book because it made me think about interactions in my own life. The author brings up many relevant scenarios that hit home for me, and it has helped me to evaluate my own listening and understanding skills.

On the other hand, this book did have a few drawbacks. The author quoted many poets and used some examples which came off to me as a little drug-store psychologist-y. The other issue was some of the language felt very judge-y. The author will state that we should try to use less judgmental language when speaking to others, and then say "don't be that person", which in itself is judgmental language.

All in all, this was a decent book, if for no other reason than the fact that many of the points the author brings up are relevant and can help us to evaluate our own listening skills and interactions with others and to be more self-aware.
