I was totally engaged and inspired by Kate Murphy’s You’re Not Listening: What You’re Missing and Why it Matters. Ms. Murphy offers a perfect balance of solidly researched theories, fascinating subjects, engaging stories, and real-world insights. My favorite story was of Naomi Henderson, the 74-year-old focus-group moderator who’s fine-tuned tactics helped launch one of my favorite cleaning products.

Ms. Murphy is a master at similes and metaphors, bringing her ideas to life and making them easy to remember. I liked how she pointed out where most people veer off course. For example, I realized I short-change some of my interactions by not seeking clarification. I’ve now started using Terry Gross’s tactic of saying “wait, can we go back to …” which has resulted in far greater understanding. I also liked how Ms. Murphy offers practical behaviors to adopt for improvement in listening, and those to avoid.

Reader tip: make sure your highlighter has plenty of ink because you’ll want to highlight several phrases and passages for later reference.

Thank you to Celadon Books and Kate Murphy for an ARC of You’re Not Listening in exchange for an honest review.
