I've long suspected that I'm not the best listener, and the opening chapters of Kate Murphy's You're Not Listening tended to confirm that impression. But I want to do better, and can't wait to read the rest of this fascinating book to learn more. Strategies I've seen suggested in the past (repeat/paraphrase what the speaker said is just one example) seem phony to me, and I was delighted to see that Murphy did *not* make such suggestions, and in fact, noted that if you have to ACT like you're listening, you'e not really listening. Her descriptions of listening coaches working with parents of toddlers struck me as right on, and applicable to listeners of any age or circumstance who want to connect better with others.

I've already added this title to my Want to Read shelf on Goodreads, along with four quotes from just this brief sample. I'm confident that my final review there after reading the whole book will be strongly positive.
