Sean Dietrich is an author that has been on my radar since reading and enjoying his novel,The Incredible Winston Browne. Dietrich is a gifted storyteller; he has the reader laughing at one moment, crying the next. You Are My Sunshine, confirms that Dietrich’s writing affects me in the very best of ways. In this nonfiction work, Dietrich shares his innermost feelings and thoughts regarding his wife’s cancer diagnosis only a couple of years into their marriage, and the resulting promise that he made to accompany her on a big adventure once treatment was completed. What started as a figurative promise to support and encourage his wife’s recovery, turned into actually biking The Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Towpath trail. Although a self-confessed non-athlete, and completely unprepared for the rigorous undertaking, his commitment to his wife and the promise that he made to her, took him on not just a physical journey, but an emotional one as well. It is a touching account that at times is heartwarming and at others heartbreaking. Dietrich narrates with humor, offering bits of wisdom along the way. It was the experience of a lifetime, and from the comfort of my reading chair, I was glad to be along for the ride.
