This book is like a Frankenstein retelling, if Frankenstein created his monster to fight the Nazis. Instead of the monster being created from human parts, it’s a golem, a being from Jewish folklore. I really enjoyed the history aspect of this book. Most people are probably familiar with WWII and the treatment of those of Jewish beliefs, but I don’t know how many people are familiar with Lithuania’s struggles during that time. The book really focuses on the struggles of the people and not so much the broader war going on, giving more insight into what actual people might have gone through. I also liked fantasy aspect, with Vera being a golem, created through magic from clay. I think we as a reader are able to learn more about people’s experiences because Vera isn’t human, so we get to learn alongside her as she’s learning what it means to be human. I did find some parts of this story slow since there’s a lot of just walking from one place to another, but there still was a good amount of action.
