Couldn't connect with the characters

It's just not connecting with me unfortunately. I think lately I've become more picky with the YA I enjoy, and while this was promising, it didn't deliver in a way that I found compelling.
The premise and inclusion of a golem was very cool, but I found my mind wandering and thinking of other books this reminded me of: mainly the beginning with Ezra made me think of Frankenstein în Bagdad (beyond regular Frankenstein because it is so rooted in vengeance for war), and later on the relationship between the main characters was reminiscent of The Host in the way he's in love with what used to be her body, and she is a separate entity inhabiting that body with memories of them together too.
The characters are hard to connect to and I don't really understand what is driving them. It feels like they are almost automatons- being driven by the plot as opposed to the other way around.
