This cover is beautiful. The artist has such a talent. I’ll never get tired of seeing this on my shelf for sure!

When his daughter is killed by the Nazis, Ezra does the unthinkable. He creates a Golem made of clay in the image of his daughter and uses her eyes and teeth in order for it to use her memories. Vera isn’t Chaya, but she has Chaya’s spirit inside of her. Left to bring vengeance, Vera sets out on a mission to punish those who killed Chaya. Along the way, she meets a boy. A boy who Chaya had a relationship with. Although Vera is a monster, she is given empathy and human feelings. She knows longing and despair. Vera and her friends set off to bring justice to those the Nazis have hurt.

This was a powerful read, as are most books set in the Nazi era. Vera is a tool for destruction and retribution, yet she feels regret and love. I liked how she struggled with humanity, even though she wasn’t human. There was a sadness there. She knows she has to help, but isn’t sure how. Along the way, she meets people who knew Chaya and she has to hide her identity. I read a lot of people upset that there wasn’t enough wrath in a story centered on wrath, and while I agree, I also thought that the gore and fighting was enough. It’s a quick read, and it packs a punch. Vera knows she can’t save everyone and it disturbs her. The ending was bittersweet. This is my second book by Aden and I’m enjoying his writing the more I read. Also I usually jokingly complain, but I enjoyed the glossary and map. It really helped since I am super unfamiliar with Jewish terms and phrases
