This is a fantasy novel with Spanish undertones. It exhibits a once wealthy and aristocratic society that is now poor and starving. A young woman lives her life as the decoy to the queen. It was a bit difficult to get into when I first began reading but once I got into it I couldn’t put it down. The words the author using provide vivid imagery and really make one feel as if they are in the world the characters exist in. The story has magical implements. The main characters each have magical powers that they use to help others. The decoy uses moonlight to weave tapestries and producing moon dust. This dust can be used to make a person fall into a deep, dreamless sleep. The queen is a seer and can read the stars. She uses this ability to warn others of future events (though she hasn’t quite mastered it when the story begins). The author really makes a reader feel a connection to the characters and their emotions. Overall the story is beautiful and impossible to put down!
