I have two criteria when it comes to buying a YA book: it needs to be queer or it needs to feature characters of color. This book drew me in immediately with it’s to-die-for cover and the premise was even more captivating. I have never read a book inspired by Bolivia and I loved the usage of Bolivian politics throughout the story. Ibañez is a gorgeous writer and while the book suffered from a lack of complex world building her gorgeous style bolstered it beautifully. I love magic, I just wish I understood why certain people have certain kinds! But truly a minor complaint. This was a marvelous debut novel and I will be recommending it to people for sure. I’m excited to see what Isabel Ibañez does next!
