We meet Lori Mendenhall on the day she returns home from a top class physical rehabilitation center. She has been there for months recovering from a terrible car accident that left her with a traumatic brain injury and caused the loss of her son Austin. The injury robbed her of her memories of the years prior to the accident. We follow her journey as she tries to recover them while trying to reconnect with her daughter Avery who is reeling from the loss of her twin and feeling abandoned by those she thought were friends. As Lori recovers more of her memories she has to decide if she wants to return to the woman she was or the woman she is becoming as she recovers her memories. At the same time her daughter must decide if she wants to be true to herself the memory of her twin or the person her used to be friends expect her to be.As she figures out how to be her most authentic self she falls in love with her longtime secret crush Alexander Dixon. We watch all of these remarkable characters grow into the people they always wanted to be and Micheal Mendenhall learns along the way that providing and loving means more than just material things it also means being emotionally present. This is a story that teaches that just because something is broken doesn’t mean it can’t be rebuilt to be even stronger. This book handles very hard subjects and also faith with care and compassion for both the characters and the reader. One of the best books I have read so far this year.
