I think this is going to be one of those books that I won't be able to stop thinking about. And I'm going to have to encourage friends to read it because I want to talk about it.

Betty, Byatt, and Reese attend a boarding school on an island in Maine. Something called the Tox has infected everything loving, including people, on the island. It affects everyone differently, causing their bodies to change and morph, sometimes changing body parts, sometimes causing sores or pain. It comes in waves. At first the girls thought they were going to be rescued, but, instead, they end up quarantined. We join the girls a year and a half into their quarantine. Life is very much about survival. Loyalty and friendship is also highly valued.

I am not sure what I think about this book. It's intense and difficult and messy and I felt like I needed to bear witness to the girls' struggles. And perhaps this is also true of growing up- intense and difficult and messy and we need to see each other and be there.

Thanks to the publisher, Delacorte Press, for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
