I absolutely love the survival/dystopian/horror theme. It begins at a boarding school called “The Raxter School for Girls” off the coast on an island of Maine. The school is put on Quarantine by the CDC & Navy due to a deadly & disfiguring disease that has plagued the island, not only the humans & animals, but the plants, wildlife, the earth...it is known as THE TOX. Slowly it comes killing off the teachers slowly, then the students get it but they do not all die; some end up with second spines, scales, losing parts of themselves, things you cannot even imagine in nightmares. They are told to await in the gates surrounding the school while the are awaiting a cure. They are going hungry and becoming feral and life is cut off from anyone except those living in the house. It tells you a story of friendship that Hetty and Byatt have; who are also are the the two main narrators of the book. Also their friend Reese who ends up developing more than just a friendship along the way with Hetty when Byatt goes missing. Hetty is willing to risk everything to find out where Byatt is and to rescue her even if it means risking her own life; or even breaking quarantine.
It really needs a disclaimer because this book will shock you, test your limits at what you are capable to handle involving graphic death, repulsive & gory details.

Not going to lie, I could NOT put this book down and finished it in less than a day. I loved the book as much as I knew I would but there remains too many questions left unanswered that led me desperately aching with the need to know. I have to hold out hope that there is possibly a Book 2 on the horizon because I know it would be the answers so many of us crave.

This book has so many elements and plots that keep your finger on the page ready to flip to read the next page. The problem is, there is never really any background given on any character to help you form a deeper connection. When something happens to someone, it’s easy to move on because the character development was not there to form an intimate relationship. I would have liked to have known how and why they all came to Raxter’s.
