Not a great read at all. The story had potential at the beginning and halfway through lost my interest.
Byatt, Hetty and Reese are quarantined at a school on an island because of the Tox, a disease; a sickness. It causes deformities, gruesome changes in bodies and death. It fluctuates with the seasons and if you survive a flare up there is no guarantee you make it through another. A boat arrives with supplies, but all the girls and 2 of the teachers left are starving. Hetty gets chosen to join the Boat Shift which consists of 1 teacher and 3 girls. They make the supposed dangerous trek to the waters edge and await the delivery. This where the story completely flops. Big time. Everything that happens after makes no sense.
Byatt disappears, Hetty finds out secrets the teachers have been keeping and Reese gets sucked right in along with her friends. The ending is awful. No closure, no leaving the reader wanting more, just an end that isn't even an end. All the talk about this book and it was a disappointment to read. Could have been so much better.
