I was desperate to get my hands on an ARC of this book, after reading the first look. Some force on the island is essentially mutating the inhabitants and eventually, killing them. There's a desperation to the entire novel that kept me reading, long after I should have turned out the lights and gone to sleep. I cannot imagine going to bed one night, and not knowing if you'd wake up with an eye fused closed, or scales for skin, or fingers fused together. It's horrifying to really think about what they would be feeling in that situation. Their struggle for resources and survival is only outweighed by their struggle with nature itself. The plot is perfect, world and character building is perfect. This is everything you could want in a book.
