One of the points I have seen in notices for Wilder Girls is that it is like The Lord of the Flies. I haven't read that particular classic. As a teen, the description sounded too much like the boys in high school so I skipped it. So when I began reading the preview of Wilder Girls, I had no preconceived notions of what it would be.

Wilder Girls grabbed my attention immediately. A pathogen of some unknown type called the Tox has affected everything on the island. All the animals and people are being changed by Tox. Some visible ways, others hidden under the skin. Not everyone survives the changes. Yes, changes. They continue beyond the first horrifying episode.

The preview centered on Hetty and her close friends. They look out for each other and protect each other. But just the three of them. So they can be threatened by larger groups of girls.

The preview had several things that check my boxes for a must-read: a mysterious pathogen, the mutation of the pathogen in each individual, being cut off from the rest of the world, and girls not boys as the center. I enjoyed the preview so much I pre-ordered the book through Audible.
