I love the styling and cover of this book—very eye catching. Unfortunately that is probably my favorite thing about it. The narrative starts out strong, and Honoree’s flashbacks are vivid with details from ‘20s Chicago. I really liked the descriptions of her clothing and the sprinkling of ‘20s vernacular throughout. The flashbacks are the strongest parts of the book, and they really emphasize the hardships of African-Americans living and working in the city at that time as well as highlighting the vibrancy and violence of speakeasies.

Sawyer’s storyline was challenging to relate to—his love for his sister and pain from her death is obvious but I did not understand the point in having her ghost appear at random times in the plot. His family secrets are what drives much of his action but there were just a few too many twists, especially near the end of the book, for me to get on board.
