Part of this book takes place in Chicago in 1925 when bootleg whiskey and gangsters where part of the main stream of life. Honoree Dalcour lives during this time and her dream is to leave Miss Hattie's Garden Cafe and Archie the owner where she currently works and to dance at the Dreamland Cafe, the ritziest black-and-tan nightclub there is. The other part of the book takes place in 2015 when a film student, Sawyer Hayes, arrives on the fifth floor of the Bronzeville Senior Living Facility to interview the 110 year old Honoree Dalcour hoping to be able to fill in a missing part in the filmmaking career of Oscar Micheaux as his documentary thesis in media studies. I am not a fan of dual time lines in a book and I found the book to start off slow but once it got through who the prominent characters where in the book, it was impossible to put it down. I want to thank Bookish First and Kensington for an ARC of this book and the opportunity to read it and give my honest review.
