I was excited to get this book and it didn’t disappoint. It’s well researched Historical fiction mixed with mystery. 1925 in Chicago, the Jazz age rife with Black and Tan speakeasies, Capone influence, policy betting and murder, murder, murder. Honoree is a dancer at the famed Dreamland Cafe, dreaming of fame but trouble always finds her. Life is difficult for black people, especially black women who are treated as little more than dirt. At the end of her life, she is visited by Sawyer, a young man looking to finish his college thesis and looking for answers from Honoree about her relationship with filmmaker Oscar Micheax. He’s haunted by the death of his sister and his part in her death. With Honoree he discovers surprises, healing and forgiveness. He discovers Honoree isn’t who she claims to be and that the two of them have a deep connection that the reader will not see coming.
