I'm a pretty avid reader when it comes to historical fiction and I was very excited to receive this book. It's really impressive to me when the first book published by an author, in this case Denny S. Bryce, is so well written. The storytelling in this book captured me pretty quickly, I enjoyed following along Honoree's life.
Black women have had it extremely hard in American history and this book highlights that but it also shows what they are capable of even when they are being kicked down again and again. The characters in this book are strong but also it showcases real life famous black women (such as Lin Armstrong) who made history.
There was actually quite a bit of suspense in the novel which kept me turning pages, I really wanted to know what was going to happen, but I was disappointed by some parts of the ending. I don't want to spoil what happens. Some of it (the ending) was great but I just felt some of it was a bit off.
Overall I think it's a really great read and would recommend picking it up if you love historical fiction!
