There aren't a lot of books that capture me from the first page but Wild Women and the Blues just blew me away. Set in 1920s prohibition when Al Capone ruled Chicago Honoree (pronounced Honor-ray) works at a dive speakeasy. She dances and sings but aspires to be more. She auditions at one of the best clubs in town but not before disaster strikes. I love Honoree's storyline. It brought me right to the 1920s with the outfits, crime, tommy guns, mobsters, and down and dirty Chicago. There are a lot of famous name drops in this book from Louis Armstrong to Cab Calloway. Just fascinating period in time.

The secondary plot is from 2015. Sawyer Hayes is doing a film project to get his doctorate on the 1920s filmmaker Oscar Michaeux who Honoree was associated with. He goes to visit her in a nursing home to get her story. He's dealing with tragedy and ghosts of his past just a Honoree does throughout the book.

There are a lot of twists and turns that keeps you guessing until the last page.

Definitely pick this one up if you are interested in historical fiction during prohibition in Chicago.
