Rennie needs to feel important, needs to feel valued. Especially by her dynamic mother, who ironically probably created Rennie's need in the first place. And desperate to feel important to her mother, she agrees to be her mother's confidant when she engages in an affair with her husband's best friend. It's quite easy to get sucked into this, while feeling more than a little disgusted with the people that are doing it.
