Two major thoughts after come to me as I begin reading: Adrienne Brodeur (“Rennie”) is an amazing writer. Her descriptions of the setting, the people, and the emotions seduce the reader. The second is that her mother was horribly self-centered. To bare witness to, and take complicity in, her mother’s affair is an emotionally damaging position to be in. Why would someone actively do that to a child? This questions and Ms. Brodeur’s exquisite writing will make this an unputdownable memoir.
