I really enjoyed this latest book by Lynda La Plante, although it was not a Jane Tennison police procedural. It does, however, still have strong female characters, in the form of four widows who set out to plan the perfect heist. I will always remember the character of Dolly, the oldest widow and the leader of the pack who was absolutely determined to make lemonade out of lemons. When she heard that her beloved husband Harry had been killed, she did not wallow in grief but instead she started planning a way to be independent and self-sustaining. The storyline had the important element of including a detective inspector who had been retired against his will and who sets out to solve the crimes, regardless. So, the author seems to be saying that the older people, like Dolly and Detective Resnick, may not be as physically strong as others, but they are still intuitive. Readers of the author’s Jane Tennison series and anyone who enjoys a good romp through the life of crime will enjoy this book. I laughed aloud at parts of it, and I think that it will be a big hit in the book world!
