Book Description
Harry Rawlins had been masterminding robberies for 20 years. The hijack of a security van would bring the gang thousands, but the job went wrong & Harry & his team were killed. Harry's widow, Dolly, had three options. She could hand over Harry's ledgers to the police. She could hand them over to a bunch of thugs. Or she could take the business over.
My Thoughts
Widows was an enjoyable read and a nice change of pace from my TBR pile loaded with psychological thrillers. The 'widows' have all lost their husbands during a failed robbery and when Dolly receives information regarding his 'business', she decides to finish the job he started with the help of the other widows. They have to stay one step ahead of not only a detective determined to solve this case but also other criminals who want the information Dolly has.
I thought this would be a good beach read, however, the weather did not cooperate. I did at least finally get a rain-free day and settled into my favorite chair in the garden with my copy of Widows. The characters each had distinct personalities and it didn't take long for the afternoon to fly by since there were quite a few twists and turns in the story. Separately each widow was very different and when they came together as a group, they melded well, though not without clashing and disagreeing.
This was first published in 1983 in Great Britain, which explains why I felt much of the dialogue seemed dated. Once I realized this wasn't written recently, it helped me just enjoy the story. I thought the ending worked so I didn't regret any of the time I spent reading Widows.
Thank you, Lynda La Plante, Zaffre and Bookish First for the copy I won. I am not really much of a movie person, but for those who are, it states on the cover that this will be a motion picture. With the right cast, it might be a film many would enjoy.
