The story is set at a Wild West show in 1926, with a native American female performer as a lead. The author doesn’t build up the story in a way that I am accustomed to, but rather presents the main character’s world in bits and pieces, which prevented me from really sinking into the story. And I often found myself asking “who is this person?” when a name would pop up. There seemed to be a shift around half-way through, after which the story was told like a more traditional narrative, but there isn’t a lot of action or character development. The story touches on the spirit world as well as racism. There was also a notable event in the plot which was too far-fetched and unrealistic for me to buy and I almost put down the book at that point.
Thank you to the author and publisher for a free pre-publication copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
