The fascinating and esoteric world of the 1920s in Nashville, TN is explored in WHEN TWO FEATHERS FELL FROM THE SKY. By examining the sociological and racial histories of the area, the author gives the reader insights into how different people experienced racism and sexism during this time period. Two is a Native American and her story is linked to the treatment or really mistreatment of Native Americans by the US Govt. She neither fits in with the other people nor can she escape them because her very "exotic" status as a Native American makes the basis for her horse jumping act. When she becomes injured, the problems and concerns of the society are examined. From the fact they need special permission to take her to the "white" hospital with better doctors, to the fact she cannot go home to get better because the journey would be dangerous due to her race. The problems from WWI and PTSD of soldiers is also addressed in Clive's character and his mental illness problems. I enjoyed the cast of characters and the examination of prejudice and racism in the 1920s. I do think the author tries to include a ton of information and some sections felt like a history textbook about Native Americans, Black history and WWI soldiers. However, overall I enjoyed the tone, the meandering plot and the wide variety of fascinating characters.
