I was initially interested in this book because I love all things equine and because I know absolutely nothing about diving horses and was fascinated by the topic. This book was nothing at all what I expected. Two Feathers is such a rich and interesting character and I loved her boldness and sass. This book had a depth I didn't expect. There is horse diving, sure, but this is not a book about diving. This is a book about relationships: intimate ones, racial ones, spiritual ones, friendships with a bond of brotherhood. It's about war and the aftermath of war. It's about Cherokee history and the losses they suffered in so many ways. It's about the Black community in the south in the 20's, from a different perspective. It's about the spirit, in so many forms. This book took me to a time and place that I knew nothing about and enlightened me about topics I didn't even know I wanted to learn. It was even more fascinating to read the author's note and learn the background about why she chose to write the book. For anyone that is ready to read a historical fiction that's NOT about WWII - this might be the book for you. It's well written, well informed, and a fascinating story with some very engaging characters.
