When Two Feathers Fell from the Sky by Margaret Verble is a novel that takes place at the Glendale Park Zoo in Nashville, Tennessee after World War I. The zoo has several shows to bring in and entertain visitors. The star performance features a Cherokee woman who goes by the stage name of Two Feathers diving into a pool with a horse named Ocher. The crowds gather to watch the jump in eager anticipation oblivious to where the real danger lies.

This story is a fascinating fictional account of a genuine place and real historical events. I appreciate the fact that the author decided not to sugar coat the trials and tribulations of nonwhite protagonists while at the same time highlighting their indomitable spirit (quite literally). I thought it was brilliant to see some white folks rise to acknowledge the ghosts of their past – some learning from them while others didn’t.

Be warned that there is a good deal of adult content in this book. Some of it will challenge your stereotypes of the good old days being all sweet and innocent! In addition, there are instances of descriptive violence that are a bit gross. I recommend this book for young adult readers or older. Women of all ages will love this action-packed adventure!
