Serious, historic topics within book of fantasy

I appreciated that this book of historical fiction begins without sugar coating realities of previous eras. It was an immediate entry into our past and what we can anticipate from the book. I am interested to know how the history, mystery, and supernatural are woven together (as the plot suggests).
